Cyclists covered more than 27,000 kilometres last week to succeed in raising almost $14,000 to sponsor South West people with cancer to attend Balya Wellness Retreat.
As a result of this, South West Bike Week 2010 has been declared a success in raising thousands for the worthy cause, boosting the awareness of the Balya Wellness Retreat and getting more people on their bikes.
Big Fish Media & Events is a major sponsor of the fundraising initiative, carrying out promotion and event management on the day.
Throughout the week about 180 riders took on a challenge for the worthy cause. This ranged from keen cyclists who completed 200km over the week, teams of 10 which completed 200km together and families who took part in a smaller ride on Sunday.
Event organiser Brian Kennedy said the support from the community and sponsors exceeded his expectations.
“The support from the local community, businesses and industry overwhelmed me and it was critical in making this event a success yet again,” Mr Kennedy said.
“However the greatest satisfaction for me personally was that we managed to raise awareness of Balya Cancer Retreat which is something very close to my heart.”
Mr Kennedy is 77 years of age, a former professional cyclist who still competes internationally and is this year’s West Australian Senior of the Year.
However he said the greatest challenge he had overcome was surviving cancer twice. He believed this was possible by combining conventional medicine and an understanding of healthy eating and positive thinking.
This was critical knowledge which he still treasured and gained after being sponsored by an anonymous donor to attend Balya Wellness Retreat in Gidgegannup.
“My goal is to encourage people to be active and to let people know all about Balya – a remarkable place which helped to save my life and continues to keep me positive today,” Mr Kennedy said.
“I would also like to hear from local people with cancer who are interested in attending Balya Wellness Retreat. Thanks to the generous sponsors and community we have big pool money that is ready to be spent to help local people with cancer access these life-changing retreats.”

Mr Kennedy would also like to extend a special thanks to sponsors Big Fish Media and Events, BHP Billiton Worsley Alumina, Chef’s Long Table Lunch, Scott Park Homes South West, Alcoa, Natural Temptations Café and RCR Mining.
